Test Day

The night before

Sleep, logistics and a sensible routine so you arrive calm and focused.

Stop active revision by early evening. The night before the exam is not the time to learn new material. Your brain consolidates what you already know during sleep; new input the night before rarely sticks and often increases anxiety. A light glance over familiar notes is fine; attempting fresh practice papers is not.

Get 8 hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation measurably impairs processing speed, working memory, and error-checking, exactly the capabilities the ESAT tests. One extra hour of revision traded for one hour less sleep is almost always a bad deal.

Eat a normal dinner. Avoid alcohol or anything that would disrupt sleep. If you're feeling anxious, a short walk or gentle exercise in the evening is more useful than sitting with a textbook open, worrying.

Exam tip

If you can't sleep, don't force it; lying still in the dark is still rest. What to avoid is staying up late with screens, extra revision, or social media. Set your alarm, close the laptop, and let your brain decompress. Anxiety the night before is normal and does not predict performance.

Lay out everything you need the night before so the morning is entirely frictionless:

  • Valid photo ID: passport or photo-card driving licence; double-check the name matches your UAT-UK account exactly
  • Pearson VUE confirmation email: printed, or accessible on your phone to show at reception before you hand it in
  • Your test centre address and travel plan: check your route, add a 30-minute buffer for delays
  • Comfortable layers: test centres are often heavily air-conditioned

Do not pack: a calculator of any form, your phone (it goes in the locker), any watch, notes, or revision materials. None of these are permitted in the test room.

Exam tip

Check transport and weather the night before. Arriving late to a Pearson VUE appointment means forfeiting your slot; entry is refused after 15 minutes past your scheduled time. A 30-minute buffer beyond your expected travel time is not excessive for an appointment this important.
